About Giant Blobs From Mars (Ludum Dare 46)

Giant Blobs From Mars was created for Ludum Dare 46, a 72-hour global game development event built around the theme "Keep it Alive." The competition featured over 4,000 submitted entries. The concept reverses the traditional survival formula by placing players in control of an invading alien organism whose objective is to consume Earth's resources and spread across the planet.

Players expand the blob across adjacent terrain tiles, managing energy gained from devoured land such as grasslands, forests, farms, mountains, and cities. Some terrain types require more time to consume but return greater energy over time. Expansion paths matter... once a tile is consumed, certain routes may close permanently, forcing strategic decisions about growth direction and long-term positioning.

Developed and composed by Billy McDaniel under the Almighty Games label, the game features an improvised acoustic guitar soundtrack recorded live during development. The calming, meditative tone of the music contrasts with the destructive premise, giving the experience a surprisingly relaxed atmosphere. After the jam, the project was refined and later expanded into a full Steam release.
