Punch is not a weapon but your unarmed attack when you have nothing equipped. At the very start of the game, you are forced to rely on your fists until you discover your first weapon. Punching deals the weakest damage possible and cannot be imbued with special effects.
While it is technically possible to play through the game using nothing but fists, the lack of sockets and the extremely low damage output make it one of the greatest challenges an adventurer could attempt.
